Planting Trees

Plan where you want to plant in advance; taking note of the soil type and its suitability for the tree species; the amount of sunlight and shade in the area; the space available for the tree canopy to develop and grow; and the location of nearby structures that could be affected long-term by mature tree roots.

Avoid planting in frozen ground, or after heavy rain and protect exposed roots from high winds. Unpack the plants – but don’t remove any hessian mesh on root balled plants, which is there to protect the roots and will rot away naturally. Ensure the tree is straight when planting. Trees can be single or double staked and the trunk secured to the stake with tree ties to support the plant whilst it grows. These ties can be loosened as the tree grows so as not to restrict the trunk width.

It is also ideal to plant with a watering kit – tubing around the roots of the tree underground with a mouth reaching above the ground, allowing nutrients to reach the roots more directly. Firm soil/compost but do not compact it.

Putting a layer of mulch (bark chips or garden compost) over the surface of the surrounding soil – without touching the stems – can help suppress weeds and conserve moisture, and should be kept at around 2-3 inches deep. You may need spiral tree guards to protect from rabbits, or you can use wire mesh to net the area until the tree is well-established.

There are specific fertilizers that benefit growth of newly planted/young trees. A slow release granular fertilizer is ideal to give the tree the nutrients it needs regularly through the watering kit. Feed the newly planted tree well and continue to water regularly.

Pruning techniques and frequency will depend on the type of tree, but generally should be done at least annually once the tree is established and is dormant to ensure the plant is free of dead and broken foliage.
