Some plants may fail, so it is advised to purchase 5-10% more plants than will cover the area you are planting. However, good soil preparation and aftercare should reduce the number of losses significantly.

Planting Bare Root Hedging

A trench should be prepared prior to delivery so that plants can be planted as quickly as possible. Remove perennial weeds and grass (you may want to weed-kill a couple of weeks before delivery). Thoroughly dig over a trench (the depth will depend on the size of the plants on order), making sure the sides and bottom have good drainage.

If planting in a single row, plant 3 plants per metre, if a double row this can be increased to 5 per metre in staggered rows. Leaving 30-40cms between the rows.

Avoid planting in frozen ground, or after heavy rain and protect roots from high winds. Unpack the plants – but don’t remove any hessian mesh, which is there to protect the roots and will rot away naturally. Plant to the level of the ‘nursery mark’ on the plant, where the soil level reached previously and backfill. Ensure the plant is straight. Firm soil but do not compact it. Water the newly planted hedge well and continue to water regularly so the soil is moist, but not sticky.

In poorer quality soil, you may need to improve it by adding well-rotted manure, garden compost or soil improver – to be mixed in well with the surrounding soil. Taller plants in windy sites may need staking to keep the plant growing up straight.

Keep the new hedges well-watered and free of weeds and grass over the width of the planting area for the first two years of growth. Putting a layer of mulch (bark chips or garden compost) over the surface of the surrounding soil – without touching the stems – can help suppress weeds and conserve moisture, and should be kept at around 2-3 inches deep. You may need spiral tree guards to protect from rabbits, or you can use wire mesh to net the area until the hedge is well-established.

Pruning techniques and frequency will depend on the type of hedging plant but generally should be done at least annually once the hedge is established and is dormant to ensure the plant is free of dead and broken foliage and grows bushy, as well as upwards.
