Sorbus aria (whitebeam) is an ornamental tree loved by garden birds.
White five-petal flowers in May and red berries in late summer/autumn.
Thick, green oval leaves, toothed with white felt-like hair on the underside. Change to a rich russet colour before falling in autumn.
Flowers pollinated by insects; berries favoured by birds; and leaves eaten by caterpillars and moths.
Tolerates most well drained soil types, including chalk/alkaline.
